The ANC seems to be divided between those who support Ramaphosa and those who are behind Magashule, Zuma’s former group.

Ramaphosa’s group includes Mbalula who said that the ANC wouldn’t have gotten as much votes as it did these past elections if it wasn’t for Ramaphosa.

Magashule’s group includes Niehaus. A verbal war broke out between ANC NEC member Fikile Mbalula and Carl Niehaus – a close confidant of party secretary general Ace Magashule – on social media, with Mbalula vowing that “crook” Niehaus will be dealt with.

Niehaus tweeted: “Hmmm so this young chap, Mr. Fearfokkol , @MbalulaFikile, has gone & blocked me. He seems to fear much, especially engagement about his blatant opportunism, careerism & lack of repect for his seniors, such as the SG of the ANC, comrade @Magashule_Ace. Talk about real cowardice!”

Last week we saw the episodes of MagashuleVSMbalula, MbalulaVSNiehaus playing out even on social media, this is not the only evidence of divisions in the ANC.

“Today is the first caucus of the ANC as we establish the sixth Parliament of the Republic of South Africa. All 230 odd MPs are here. They are ready to be sworn in tomorrow [Wednesday],” said Duarte.

“They are going to be leading our programme and manifesto of the ANC,” she said.

“It’s time to rollout the sleeves. Do the hard work, leave factions behind and make South Africa work for all of us,” added Duarte.

Duarte said the start of the sixth Parliament should see an end to factional battles, and focus on oversight work and strengthening the work of the legislature.
