SABC: Shows may experience blackouts amid broadcasts

The Department of Communications says the National Treasury is considering granting SABC a requested loan of R3.2 billion.

On Monday during an interview on SABC, the broadcaster’s Chief Financial Officer, Yolanda van Biljon warned of the possibility of a communication blackout amid broadcasts due to the dire financial crisis.

She says the organisation is stuck with large debts, including Johannesburg municipal debts.

Van Biljon says executives are working hard to get employees their salaries by the end of June, and even harder to avoid Day-Zero.

Communications acting DG, Nomvuyiso Batyi, says the SABC’s application is not the only pending application to Treasury.

“It was submitted by the SABC to us and National Treasury is considering it. This is not the only application pending in treasury. Yolande’s interview did mention that they had submitted information, but there is a lot of toing and froing with things that are outstanding that we require from you,” says Batyi.
