Alexandra Shutdown blockades entrance and exists

In Alexandra, a township north of Johannesburg, residents have begun blockading entrances and exists as part of the total shutdown of the township on Wednesday.

The planned demonstration follows the promise made by Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba to rebuild illegal structures that were demolished prior to elections on May 8.

In contrast, Alexandra residents protested the exponential growth of illegal structures in April.

Vehicles have been making u-turns trying to find alternative routes to exit the dangerous area.

On Tuesday night, police promptly intervened when there was a small group of protesters burning tyres and blockaded roads around the Malboro Gautrain station.

Police officers are outside that area patrolling the area and monitoring the protest ahead.

However, there are some taxis operating, this may cause conflict between taxi operators and protests.

Police officials advise motorists to be cautious when travelling around the area.
