Alexandra residents have started blocking roads as they begin the protest they have been promising people. The total shutdown movement has organized another Total Shutdown after the demolishing of illegal structures and the City of Johannesburg decision to rebuild the demolished 80 structures near Jukskei River.

The residents are tired of the government ignoring their demands and have decided to take their anger to the streets blocking the streets.

Motorists were fighting to get out of the township to make their way to various destinations on Wednesday morning as some roads were already blocked.

This was reportedly a planned march to Sandton.

Thandiwe Mthombeni, one of the leaders of the shutdown movement said that they have had enough of this government ignorance.

“That is why we’re responding to say enough is enough. To all the spears of government, we need service delivery, we need everything to be done because we’re tired.”

SAPS officers have been deployed to parts of Alexandra so that they can keep the order and calm the situation.

Red ants destroyed 80 structures earlier this month that were reportedly illegally built along the Jukskei River, leaving many people without homes.

However, the City of Johannesburg has since decided to rebuild the houses.

The Alexandra Total Shutdown movement didn’t like this decision by the city and promised to protest on Wednesday.

The spokesperson at Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Wayne Minnaar said: “A huge contingent law enforcement officers are busy monitoring all of the roads, both inside and on the boundaries of Alexandra. Two groups of protestors attempted to burn tires of 8th Avenue and on Marlboro Drive but those groups were dispersed quickly and the flow of public transport is normal.”
