Baxter: I will not come here and disrespect our opponents!

Bafana Bafana need to step up tonight if they’re going to keep their Africa Cup of Nations hopes alive, with coach Stuart Baxter insisting that they will not disrespect Namibia in Egypt.

South Africa lost their opening game against Ivory Coast earlier in the week, and Baxter has admitted that they didn’t create enough chances and is not happy with their performance.

Baxter’s charges now go up against their neighbours in a must-win game, and are hoping for a better showing and more goals against Namibia.

“Ivory Coast is the first game we have lost in one-and-half years and talking of dismantling Namibia is totally disrespectful towards a team that qualified for AFCON and ran Morocco very, very close,” Baxter told the official SAFA website.

“Yes, our strikers didn’t fire on the day and we didn’t create a lot of goal chances. Even then, Tyson Hlatshwayo had a good chance, Percy Tau went through and could have had a penalty. We had chances but they were not enough for us,” added Baxter.

Baxter is also hoping that fans will back the team despite the opening day loss.

“I do understand the mood back home, but that is nothing new and let’s be honest, that was a top team we were playing. There were some positives but we were not really happy with our overall performance and yes, this is a massive game for us,” explained Baxter.

“The onus is on us to produce good football. If we play the way we are capable of, we can win the game but I will not come here and disrespect our opponents,” Baxter concluded.
