A great storm which is gathering steam in the Atlantic ocean is expected to hit Cape provinces on Tuesday.

Two cold fronts are expected to bring between 50 and 70mm of rain in 24 hours to the western mountain regions of the Western Cape through Tuesday, and more than 100mm rain could hit the Hottentots Holland mountains near Stellenbosch.

The rest of the Western Cape and parts of the Northern and Eastern Cape can expect fairly good rains in the evening.

Mountainous areas in Western Cape can expect snowfall from the afternoon on Tuesday until Wednesday. Heavier snowfall of between 10cm and 20cm is expected in the southern parts of the Northern Cape.

According to eNCA, the Cape Provinces start experiencing strong winds of up to 50km/hr on Monday ahead of the storm.

The winds pick up speed on Tuesday. Most areas in the Northern and Eastern Cape provinces, as well as the eastern parts of the Western Cape, might experience wind speeds in excess of 55km/h.

Meanwhile, The South African Weather Service’s Edward Engelbrecht said Gauteng should expect colder mornings.

“Our temperatures will just remain cool for the rest of the day. Minimum temperatures will remain in the cold with Johannesburg and Vereeniging will see the minimum staying round about zero degrees and in Pretoria going to maybe about 2 degrees.”
